 Georgie
Hari, President and CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health
Sciences Foundation formally announced today the launch of
the 'Save a Heart' Campaign with a goal of
$1.6 million. Funds raised will purchase new equipment for
the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. The Foundation is very honoured
to have both Dr. Frank Nigro and Keith Jobbitt as Campaign
Chairs.
With cardiac disease at an all-time high in our area coupled
with the fact that our current cardiac equipment often experiences
technical failures and downtime due to its age, presented
a drastic problem for our Cardiology team in trying to assess
and diagnose our cardiac patients. Equally disturbing is the
52-week interval for elective patient imaging provided by
our existing MRI. This excessive wait is not acceptable in
caring for our patients.
The new equipment in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab will
improve the clarity of images and allow more complex images
to be recorded in less time enabling more patients to receive
services while assisting in diagnosing heart disease. Additionally,
the new technology supports immediate report availability
and electronic online access for our partner sites. Overall,
a 15% increase in Cardiac Catherizations will enable TBRHSC
to perform in excess of 1,500 annually.
In November, 2004, the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences
Centre identified a critical need for $7.6 million to purchase
new equipment associated with the Cardiac Catheterization
Lab and the addition of an MRI to meet the patient care needs
in both the cardiac and diagnostic areas of our Centre.
The Ministry of Health will fund $4.9 million of this project
but we need to ensure the balance of $2.7 is available to
our Centre to fund this very important equipment. The 'Save
a Heart' & associated 'Reduce the Wait Campaign' launched
by the Foundation hopes to raise the $2.7 million in our community
and region.
