to Diagnostic Imaging - Radiology Department.
Please bring your Health Card to your appointment.
A mammogram is an x-ray image of breast tissue.
- Ideally book your mammogram 5-7 days after cessation of menses when breasts are less tender.
- Do not use deodorants or dusting powders due to the aluminum in these products. You will be asked to wash these off.
- Children may not be left unattended in the Waiting Room.
- The procedure takes approximately one half hour.
- You will be asked to provide a history regarding your own breast health and family history of breast disease. An information sheet will be filled out.
- The technologist will position the breast on a film and compress firmly with a plastic paddle.
- The breast is held for only a few seconds.
- This may feel uncomfortable.
- Two films on each breast are done. After viewing these films, special views may be requested by the Radiologist.
- If you have not received your results within 10 days, call your doctor.
- A follow-up mammogram may be recommended by the Radiologist 3-6 months after the exam.
- An ultrasound of the breast may also be ordered.
