A. No, you should wash your hands before and after the following activities; eating, using the washroom, blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, or when visiting a hospital patient.


Q. What is the best way to prevent the spread of infections?

A. By washing your hands with soap and water for 15 seconds or using an alcohol hand rinse.


Q. Should antibiotics be used to treat colds and the flu?

A. No, colds and the flu are caused by viruses and should not be treated with antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to resistance.


Q. Are most infectious diseases spread through the air?

A. No, most are spread by direct contact (hands, clothing etc).


Q. Should you cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing?

A. Yes, this prevents the airborne germs from spreading to others around you.


Q. What are the symptoms of the flu?

A. They are cough, sneezing, shortness of breath, not vomiting or diarrhea.


Q. Is there a cost to having the flu vaccine?

A. No, the flu vaccine is free in Ontario to all residents.
