Avoid using playpens that have been recalled and cannot be retrofitted. If you receive a second hand playpen, please check to see if it is on a recall list.

To prevent injury or death to a child in a playpen, parents should take the following precautions:

Make sure sides are up and secure. Never leave an infant in a playpen with the sides down: your baby may roll into the pocket created between the mesh and the playpen causing suffocation.   The netting or mesh should have a vey small weave: smaller than your baby’s fingers. It should be free of tears, holes, and loose strings. Ensure the mesh is securely attached to the top rail and floor plate.   Make sure screws and staples are firmly installed and that none are missing or loose.   Make sure the pad is no more than 1 inch thick. It should be firm and fit snugly. Do not use a pad that was designed for a different playpen.   Place the play yard or play pen out of reach of window-blinds, curtains, or electrical cords.
